Martin Barr - Hawkstone Park
Doagh motocross ace Martin Barr had a great finish to his 2006 British championhip campaign with a 5th overall finish at the last round at Hawkstone Park last weekend.
After qualifying his Dixon bike it Yamaha in 10th place for the MX2 class he made a good start to race one on Sunday running in the top five at the end of lap one and staying with the leading group for the first part of the race . A mistake allowed Tom Church to pass the local teenager dropping him to sixth with only two laps to go. Church however crashed out in the closing stages and Martin regained fifth at the chequered flag.
In race two he again made a good start lying seventh at the end of the opening lap. In the final few laps of the race he moved into fifth but with two laps remaining Martin Kohut got past and Martin had to settle for sixth.
“The last couple of months have not been too good for me and I really wanted a good end to the British Championship at Hawkstone Park”. Leading up to the Hawkstone weekend I practiced a lot and my speed was good so I was really looking forward to it, confident in myself that I could get good results. Since I switched from the MX1 to MX2 things have been a lot better. The MX2 suits me a lot better and I am enjoying myself again.
The track was in good condition and I was happy with qualifying. Tenth was good and meant I was confident of getting a good start in the races. My speed was good in race one and I was running with the leading group for the opening six laps. I dropped to sixth when Tom Church got past but he fell before the finish and I took fifth, my best finish of the season and I was delighted. I was now really looking forward to race two and made a good start. I was seventh at the end of the opening lap and had worked my way into fifth but Martin Kohut passed me with two laps to go and I ended up sixth. I was real happy with my sixth place as it gave me fifth overall behind my team mate Billy MacKenzie. I was happy and the team were happy so it was a good weekend. Now we go to the final GP at Ernee , where hopefully I will qualify like Dessertmartin and score some world championship points”.
